First Generation Students: Research Essentials

This guide was developed to make first generation students aware of the resources that McFarlin offers to support academic success at TU.

Research and Writing Help

TU ID Card

Your student ID is also your library card.

You need it to get into the library after 5pm and on weekends.

Library resources

  • A-Z Database List (You can also use these off-campus)
    • McFarlin has over 500 databases that cover all major subject areas studied at TU.
  • WMS Discovery (The library catalog)
    • You can use Discovery to search for articles and books both owned by McFarlin as well as libraries worldwide
  • Journal List
    • With nearly 1 million electronic journals and newspapers, McFarlin has scholarly publications for every discipline.
  • Course Reserves 
    • These are library books that your instructor has set aside for supplemental reading.
    • Reserve books are at the Circulation Desk.
  • Complete list of our DVD collection
    • Physical media is alive and well at McFarlin -- take advantage of this collection the next time your WiFi goes down.
  • Special Collections
    • Open to all TU students and the public, this collection of books, manuscripts, artifacts, and artwork is a incredible resource that is utilized by scholars worldwide. Make an appointment through their website.

You can check out up to 20 books at a time.

  • Most books can be kept for 28 days, but browsing books can be kept for 14 days.
  • You can renew online 3 times as long as nobody else wants the book.

You can check out up to 5 CDs/DVDs at a time.

  • You can keep them for 14 days.
