Knowledge for Freedom - KFF: Mythbusting Digital Resources

This guide was created to support the information needs and library instruction links for the students who are part of the Knowledge for Freedom program at TU.

Importance of reliable information

It's important to ensure that the information you are sharing, saving, and referring to is legit. Below are some defintions to help you better understand what you might encounter when uncovering the truth.

AI Hallucinations: falsehoods or inaccuracies in the output of a generative AI model. Often these errors are hidden within content that appears logical or is otherwise correct. (source)

Deepfakes: any of various media, esp. a video, that has been digitally manipulated to replace one person's likeness convincingly with that of another, often used maliciously to show someone doing something that he or she did not do. (source)

Disinformation: is false information which is deliberately intended to mislead; intentionally misstating the facts. (source)

Fact-check: the process of checking that all the facts in a piece of writing, a news article, a speech, etc. are correct. (source)  Note: fact-checking often involves a person checking multiple sources to verify the information.

Fake News: false stories that appear to be news, spread on the internet or using other media, usually created to influence political views or as a joke. (source)

Misinformation: false or inaccurate information; getting the facts wrong. (source)

Viral: to spread widely and rapidly. (source) Note: the concept of something going viral does not mean it's accurate, just popular.

@fascinatedbyfungi Check out this brilliant orange Cheeto of the woods. I was lucky enough to find some prime specimens of the #ScarletCaterpillarClub #Cordycepsmilitaris up in New Hampshire. They are a Ascomycete fungi in the Hypocreales order that parasitize insect hosts to produce a fruiting body in their teleomorphic (2n) form. The spores are released from small dots (pits) on the fruiting body known as perethecia - in this video you can see the spores being dispersed. So cool to see 😍 . This species is widely distributed across North America, Europe, and parts of Southeast Asia (although DNA sequencing may prove this to be a species complex). Unlike many other Cordyceps species which are very specific to their insect host, C. militaris can form fruiting bodies on upwards of 50 different kinds of insects, making it quite common. Their bright orange color also makes them easy to spot. In my experience, C. militaris usually infects insect pupae before they emerge from the ground, so the fruiting bodies are usually found semi-buried or in moss. Despite what you’ll read online, I don’t think this species “zombifies” their host the way that other Cordyceps can. . Thanks to the work of William Padilla-Brown @mycosymbiote C. militaris can be commercially cultivated. Not only are they a phenomenally tasty mushroom when cooked, they contain a bevy of bioactive compounds including: cordycepin, cordymin, and polysaccharides. They are renowned their medicinal properties, people use them for energy, endurance, immune stimulation, and to treat inflammation. This is one of the few mushrooms I take regularly for medicinal purposes. . . . #cordyceps #thelastofus #hypocreales #ascomycota #spores #medicinalmushroom ♬ The Last of Us - Gustavo Santaolalla
