Electronic Resources for Alumni and Campus Visitors: Open Access Electronic Resources and Databases

McFarlin Library's policy regarding electronic resource and online database access for alumni and campus visitors.

Open Access Electronic Resources and Databases

As open access to scholarly publications becomes increasingly popular, a number of publishers, vendors, and institutions provide free access to their resources. McFarlin Library suggests accessing these open databases to facilitate your research:

  • Academic Journals: It is the vision of Academic Journals to publish research articles in all areas of human study without financial restriction to readers using the open access model of publication. They strongly believe that the open access model will spur research across the world, especially as researchers gain unrestricted access to high quality research articles.
  • African Journals Online: Open Access Titles: Historically, scholarly information has flowed from North to South and from West to East. It has also been difficult for African researchers to access the work of other African academics. In partnership with hundreds of journals from all over the continent, AJOL works to change this, so that African-origin research output is available to Africans and to the rest of the world.
  • arXiv.org: arXiv.org provides open access to 1,224,705 e-prints in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology, Quantitative Finance and Statistics. arXiv is maintained and operated by the Cornell University Library with guidance from the arXiv Scientific Advisory Board and the arXiv Member Advisory Board, and with the help of numerous subject moderators.
  • Biodiversity Heritage Library: The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is a consortium of natural history and botanical libraries that cooperate to digitize and make accessible the legacy literature of biodiversity held in their collections and to make that literature available for open access and responsible use as a part of a global 'biodiversity commons.'
