Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): A Guide to McFarlin Library Resources

What is the DNP Project?

  • A DNP Project is a scholarly writing and synthesis of advanced theoretical and clinical knowledge and skills that focuses on the translation of existing evidence into practice by:
    • Problem identification
    • Proposal development
    • Implementation
    • Evaluation
    • Dissemination
  • Title: The final scholarly project should be called DNP Project to avoid confusion with the term capstone, which is used at varying levels of education (Titling of the DNP Project, National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Statement, 2013). The DNP Project is not a research dissertation; therefore, this term should not be used.
  • Goal: to take a broad problem area, or area of concern, and turn it into a focused problem and then a specific problem statement
  • Scholarly project should include:
    • Focus on a change
    • Have a system
    • Demonstration
    • Include a plan
    • Include an explanation
    • Provide a foundation for change
  • Projects may be related to:
    • Direct patient care
    • Health care system changes, administration, information systems or policy
    • Development of knowledge tools such as clinical guidelines based on research evidence.
