What is Open Access?

Open Access is a publishing model that provides access to scholarship and research free from subscriptions or paywalls.

Types of Open Access

Full Gold Open Access

  • The final version of an article is freely and permanently accessible for everyone, immediately after publication.
  • No subscription fees are charged for any part of the journal.
  • Authors pay “article processing charges”.

Hybrid Open Access

  • Offers authors the option of making their articles open access for a fee.
  • Journals that offer hybrid OA are still subscription journals with an open access option for individual articles.
  • Authors pay article processing charges.

Green Open Access

  • A version of the author’s manuscript is made available in a repository. It may be the pre-print or author’s final peer reviewed accepted manuscript
  • There is usually an embargo period (often 12 months)
  • No article processing charges are paid.
