This guide provides information about Federal Work Study (FWS) and institutional employment opportunities for current TU students at McFarlin Library.

Student Employment at McFarlin Library

McFarlin Library has a number of part-time positions for student employment. Most of these positions are for students who are part of the Federal Work Study (FWS) program, but there are also a small number of Institutional positions that are directly supported by the library.

  • All positions are for 10-15 hours per week, and the pay rate depends on the position.
  • Positions in Bibliographic Services, Special Collections and University Archives, and Libraries System Administration are scheduled Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm only.
  • Positions in Circulation may require night and/or weekend hours.
  • The library is not in charge of hiring students for the café or computer lab.

Circulation (Federal Work Study or Institutional)

Duties of the Position

Working with library materials (shifting, shelving, sorting, shelf reading); checking items in and out; answering the telephone; sanitizing study areas; conducting room count; assisting library patrons; maintaining confidentiality of library records; and special projects. Night and/or weekend work may be required.

Skills Required to Perform This Position

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, students, and other library patrons.
  • Must be willing to shelve books and push a library cart.
  • Schedules for students in the Circulation Department are made at the beginning of each semester. While more flexible than other departments, a student worker is expected to adhere to the agreed upon schedule. Any changes to a schedule must be discussed with the Circulation student supervisor.
